Whitney Houston Pill Portrait By Jason Mecier !

Friday, March 2, 2012
Artist Jason Mecier has become famous for taking unusual objects , everything from licorice to trash that stars send him , to create breathtaking celebrity portraits.

Among his pieces are a series of controversial works that pay tribute to Hollywood personalities who have struggled with substance abuse , made entirely from pills.

Mecier's latest "pill portrait" is of Whitney Houston, who died last month.
Huffington Post has contacted Mecier to find out what inspired him to create the portrait, how he responds to those who beleive it is disrespectful to Whitney's memory, and more.

Jason Mecier was originally hired by Glamour UK magazine to do pill portraits of Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger, Courtney Love and Kelly Osbourne to illustrate an article about substance abuse in Hollywood. Since then has found it to be the perfect medium to memorialize other tragic deaths like Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston.
But how Whitney affected Mecier?

According to the artist, Whitney was the sountrack to the '80s and '90s. He absolutely LOVES "The Bodyguard." Also he loved to watch her on the reality tv show "Being Bobby Brown." She was very compelling and a huge talent according to Mecier.

But what is Mecier's response to those who find Whitney's portrait offensive?
His answer: "No. I do not worry about that" .

On the other hand Mecier admits that his depictions are sad, ironic and evocative. "As an artist you want to raise these emotions. I find these pieces more honest than disrespectful. I consider it a colorful tribute. I couldn't spend hours and days working on an art piece if I didn't care."

When Mecier was asked if there are topics that are considered off-limits, his response was a plain:"No"

What do  you think?

Does Mecier try to cash in Whitney's death by making a  controversial and ironic portait?

It is undoubtedly very ironic to create a portrait made by pills, considering the fact that pills were the cause of Whitney's death!
